Seminole Ramlin's

December 7, 2003

We all have been to milatary funerals and heard “Taps” played. Wonder how many of us know the history behind its origin? Well here it is as history says.

It began in 1862 near Harrison’s Landing in Virginia. Union Army Captain Ellicombe was in camp with his men. The Confederates were just across a small field, he heard a wounded soldier crying on the field. He decided to crawl out and pull him in for medical help. When he got him in his lines, he was dead and a Confederate soldier. Turning him over, he got the shock of his life, it was his son, who had been studing music in the South when the War broke out. Heart broken, next morning he ask his superiors for a full military funeral. He was granted only one musician. Being it was for a Confederate, he ask the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a scrap of paper in his sons pocket. The notes were the music to Taps as we know it today, which ends the day on all military bases and ships. The words are, Day is Done, Gone the Sun, From the Lakes, From the Hills, From the Skies, All is Well, Safely Rest, God is Nigh. There are 2 more verses, but the first sets the tune, a Hauntening Melody. We heard this played for our passed friend, Odell Johnson.

Last Monday, a fisherman, Benny Sombody and friend caught 2 limits of Specks up the Flint. A few catches of Perch was reported up that way. Ron Kirkland took a 38 inch long Flathead Catfish on a 6 lbs. test line. He was with Randy Weaver and Randy him 45 minutes until Randy could pull him into the boat by hand! Good catches are reported up the Chattahoochee River, Bream, Catfish and Perch. Friday, 8 nice Bass was taken on Trick Worms 6 ft. deep in a stageing area. This brings on the fact that Jack Fish are full of eggs and already in Staging areas. Pat Cutrite who had just returned from a hunting trip to West Virginia and had killed a Spike up there, was near froze Saterday morning when this monster stepped into a clearing. One clean shot was all. Very neet Pat.

The Duck season re-opened with a real honest to gosh bang. Geese was all over the place 2 hours before daylite. Many boats reported limited kills of Ringnecks. It’s gonna be a good Winter and Spring.
